When the Ford Motor Company decided to deliver new levels of durability, power, and torque to its line of Super Duty® pickups, a new Ford diesel engine called the Power Stroke was born. The line of Ford diesel engines are found in Ford Excursion SUVs, Ford Econoline vans, and Ford LCF commercial vehicles.
History of Ford Diesel Engines
From Henry Ford’s famous model T surging at the top of America’s industrial revolution to today’s Ford diesel Power Stroke engines, the Ford motor parts company has come a long way in it’s rich historic development. From 1994, when Ford diesel worked with Navistar for the manufacturing, the 7.3L was reborn and so was the Power Stroke name. 7.3L features were novel in that they included a turbocharger, fuel injectors and an intercooler for peak performance and durability.
In 2003, Ford diesel engines came up with yet another invention resulting in more power and lower emissions than the 7.3L. More efficient turbocharger and fuel injection systems as well as an exhaust gas recirculation system made the new 6.0L another successful engineering breakthrough. In addition to the increase in horsepower and torque, the 6.0L reduced engine displacement.
In 2007, Ford diesel engines kept with reduced emissions but were able to increase their focus on power and performance. Notable figures for this model are 350 HP at 3,000 RPM and a peak torque output of 650 lb-ft at 2000 RPM.
In 2011 and until today the 6.7L Power Stroke is among one of the most advanced Ford diesel engines on the market. Lighter, more powerful and fuel efficient, these Ford diesel engines feature some exciting new technologies. The "Instant Start" glow plugs allow for quick starts in cold weather, the engine block is 160 pounds lighter than the 6.4L, the engine uses aluminum cylinder heads and piston-cooling jets to keep the engine healthier longer.
The Power Stroke is particularly competitive in the full-size pickup truck market and is noted as the best-selling vehicle in the United States for over 32 years. The current generation of F-150 Super Duty-style trucks carry the most recent Ford diesel Power Stroke engine. These Ford diesel engines are strong enough to tow a trailer or RV with your F-150 or later model. It’s strong enough to do the heavy lifting and efficient enough to last through the trials and tribulations.
